Diabetes EXPO

By Jassiel Olivero

In March, New Yorkers were given free eye exams, along with cooking and exercise demonstrations, to help them prevent or control their diabetes. The American Diabetes Association and Healthfirst hosted the event, which was held at the Jacob Javits Center.

Attendees were given eye exams and watched cooking demonstrations to learn about the importance of a proper diet and portion control in managing diabetes.

Health First Director Selma Betancourt said the organization’s collaboration with the American Diabetes Association was aimed at educating the Latin community about the disease.

Diabetes is a public health problem that has been growing over the last decade. The Bronx has the highest number of diabetics in the five boroughs.

Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness for those between the ages of 18-55, said Michael J. Cooney, clinical assistant professor at NYU School of Medicine. Therefore, he recommends having an eye examination at least once a year to avoid vision damage.
