Better World Awards

By Ikponwosa Ehigie

The Better World Awards, hosted by People’s World newspaper, honor the struggles of people’s and working-class movements, as well as efforts advancing democracy, peace, civil rights, immigrant rights, economic justice, and socialism. The awards recognize individuals and organizations dedicated to building a more just, equitable, and better world.

The event was a celebration of community organizing and activism, highlighting a few community organizers and activists such as Tamika Mallory and the Stop FEC Demolition campaign, which is working to prevent the demolition of public housing in Manhattan’s Third District. Also in attendance was Jarvis Tyner, who ran for vice president in the 1970s alongside Gus Hall on the Communist Party ticket. Remarks were also delivered by video from City Council Member Christopher Marte.
