Adopt a Dog in Union Square!

By Seline Liz

Korean K9 Rescue held a small adoption event outside of Petco in Union Square on March 29, The New York City based organization partners with branches in Korea to rescue dogs in puppy mills with the goal of ending the dog meat trade in that country. This event is one of many Korean K9 Rescue holds to adopt out their dogs. They hold many mini events every weekend, at Petco Union Square, Petco Turtle Bay, and at their base office in Queens.

Celeste, the adoption coordinator, and fellow Korean K9 Rescue volunteers introduce the public to the dogs up for adoption today.

The dogs put up for adoption are cared for by foster volunteers. They foster anywhere between 15-20 dogs at a given time and hold these events in hopes of placing them in “forever homes” here in New York City.

The organization thrives through its large volunteer network. From flight volunteers who fly the dogs from Korea to NYC, to foster volunteers, to volunteers handling the actual adoption events.

Anyone can submit an application beforehand to be a pre-approved adopter through the interview process.

Through this process, pre-approved adopters can come in, meet, and adopt a dog during that same event.

Celeste highlights the Korean Jindo breed and their “Jindo Journey.” This is a program that introduces NYC to the Korean breed by offering a stipend to join trainers as they rehabilitate and train these dogs to live in urban settings.

Many people were drawn in by the scene, huddling together to get a peek at the dogs up for adoption.

Volunteers encouraged anyone to ask questions and those who were interested were able to meet the adoptable dogs. Any dog that wasn’t adopted goes back to their foster homes and comes back the next week for another chance to be adopted.
