Emojis of Color

By Krissy Lewis

We can all finally feel represented in the new emojis that accompanied the new look of the iPhone 8.3 software update. The emojis offer 300 characters that are now easily categorized by people, nature, food and drink, celebration, activity, travel and places, objects and symbols, and of course frequently used. One of the most ground breaking and noticeable changes to the app is the people. If you’re wondering why the emojis have this new golden yellow look, it’s because if you hold on that particular emoji you can now change the shade to a lighter or darker skin tone.

This is a brilliant plan for Apple to move toward a more diverse audience to compete with its competitor Google and Samsung. In releasing emojis with different skin variations, it gives users a chance to feel represented in the product they buy and use. Users can also feel a connection with the company because it shows supports and backs each race and color – smart move Apple.

While Apple may have gained a few supporters, they have lost a few. Some users don’t comfortable having to choose a skin tone every time they need to use an emoji.

Although, there are still no interracial couples, Apple has added two male couple and two female couples, along with other features like car play, iCloud library, and improvements.
