Touring the Bartow-Pell Mansion

For a little bit of Bronx history there is nothing better than exploring the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum in Pelham Bay Park. (By Pamela Valencia)

Karen Cambdin, one of the tour guides of the museum, has been working there for three years.

Cambdin is showing tourists the Bartow cemetery which is located in the back part of the house.

On the expeditions you’ll see the employees dressed in period clothing and children playing with toys which they make themselves!

Volunteers and workers help kids to build the toys that kept children from the 17th century entertained.

Elise is playing with a thematropes. The thematropes is a Native American 17th century toy that she made from scratch with the help of the volunteers.

Volunteer Petra hands out refreshments, which included popcorn, bottled water and apples.

The mansion, which was remodeled in 1842, offers tours every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday on the quarter hour until 3:15 p.m.

The carriage was built in 1842 but it was restored in 1993 and it would be used for long trips and church on Sundays. It was maneuvered by two horses and it carried four people: two in the front guiding the horses and two passengers in the back.

The mansion has an enormous backyard where tourists can go and explore.

Shari Ward is the social media coordinator for Bartow Pell. She started as a volunteer until January when the position opened up. Her job consists of uploading pictures, posting events and answering all social media questions. To reach her, email her at bpmm1654@gmail.com.
