The Season Begins

Two weeks into this year’s fall semester, Lehman College’s varsity sports programs are already in full swing with men’s soccer, women’s tennis, women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s cross country having each opened up with several non-conference contests.

Men’s Soccer

Coming off of a season in which it advanced to the CUNYAC Championship game, the men’s soccer team is off to a 2-2 start having gained impressive wins over Mount St. Vincent College and St. Joseph’s College before falling 2-1 in a tense inter-conference match with Baruch College on September 14th.  The men will have a chance to rebound over the next week when they square off against SUNY Canton’s soccer team this Friday, FDU-Florham on Monday, and CUNY rival Medgar Evers on Wednesday.  The matches against SUNY Canton and Medgar Evers will be played in the Bronx on Lehman’s South Field.

Women’s Volleyball

After a year where it earned a berth in the ECAC Division III Women’s Metro Championship for the first time ever, the women’s volleyball team has reloaded with several transfers and promising freshman players to bolster an attack led by senior leaders Gerri-Ann Martin and Jennifer Winkler.  If its recent thrilling match against defending champion Hunter College is any indication, the 2011 season will be a promising one for the Lightning.  Lehman has a full slate of matches beginning this Saturday when it will play three matches on the campus of Ramapo College, including the opener to its CUNYAC schedule against John Jay College.  Following two days off, Lehman will travel to York College on Tuesday, September 20.

Women’s Tennis

Similarly, the women’s tennis team and the men’s and women’s cross country teams are filled with significant new faces.  Women of the hardcourt have just begun the CUNYAC portion of their schedule while Coach Lesleigh Hogg’s cross country teams travel up the New York State Thruway this Saturday for the Bard Invitational in Annandale-on-the-Hudson.

With so much action happening on the court and field, Lehman Athletics, which is overseen by athletic director Dr. Martin L. Zwiren, also took time out during the college’s recent student club fair to promote its various teams as well as to recruit potential athletes for the upcoming winter and summer seasons.  Current track athletes Aminat Adebayo and Tobi Alli were on hand to answer questions from Lehman students about the school’s 17 varsity teams and share their experiences competing for the Lightning.

For more information, make sure to visit Lehman Athletics official website, lehmanathletics.com, throughout the season to stay up-to-date with all the varsity teams.  Additionally, Bronx residents can view all upcoming Lightning home contests on the school’s digital video board located on Goulden Avenue.
